Case Study: IRU (Internal Recessing) in Cast Aluminum
SUMMARY OF RESULTS Productivity Gain: 1000% Machining Time Reduction: 270 seconds to 27 seconds Yearly Cost Savings: $29,160 2.3 Months ROI THE CHALLENGE A manufacturer
The Internal Recessing Unit (or IRU, for short) is the most advanced and innovative cutting tool that Elliott Tool Technologies manufactures. The IRU is the preferred tool for machining metering lands by OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers of hydraulic control valves throughout the world.
What makes the IRU so unique is its ability to machine multiple grooves and lands simultaneously, quickly, and accurately. It eliminates the slow and unreliable processes of circular interpolation or circular milling of internal features such as grooves, chamfers, lands and faces.
The IRU not only reduces cycle time, but also produces internal features more accurately with better surface finishes and with no burrs, significantly lowering manufacturing costs. 1. Location Pilot (OD ground to suit component bore)
2. Cutter (Replaceable on carrier arm)
3. Adjustment Stop Collar (Actuate IRU with adjustable length of up to .780”)
4. Operating Head Assembly
5. Limiting Nut (To set cutting diameter – manual operation only)
1) The recess system feeds into the work-piece with the pilot locating within the component bore.
2) The operating head or optional nose piece makes contact with either the component face or a fixture plate.
3) While feeding forward, the system is actuated, lifting the cutter exactly perpendicular to the axis of rotation at a 2:1 ratio.
4) This machines all features simultaneously, with perfect concentricity.
Radial cut depth can be controlled by the limiting nut bottoming out or by the CNC program controlling the tool’s feed-depth.
